POWER TO THE YOUTH

Mandela Day

On July 18th our lovely interns went out and about to spend 67 minutes at a day care called Love and Care centre. We donated some stationery to the children which they could use during class. Our next stop was Home From Home in the Masi community where we donated some Jocky panties to the children that live there. It was wonderful to see how much they really loved our donation and it made us all feel warm inside.

Close The Gap & Arch Event

The Youth Centre facilitated and coordinated a once-off 2-day team building activity programme with 18 CEO's and 18 of their children from the charity called CLOSE THE GAP. All 36 of our international visitors collaborated and integrated with 18 of our youth to help learn about the local culture and help break down barriers. Our youth also had the pleasure to partake in a Q&A session with the Arch.

‘Intercultural Collaboration’

Holiday

Programme

In association with African Impact, we rolled out a successful Winter Holiday Programme at the YC. The youth had the opportunity to learn, collaborate and meet international students from America who helped facilitate the amazing programme.

Diversity is central to the ASL & DTYC experience. ASL & DTYC believe diversity promotes a vibrant learning process and fosters a positive school climate to prepare youth to thrive in a diverse world. The ASL & DTYC commitment to diversity influences what and how we teach as well as the composition of our intercultural collaborative programme. The Intercultural collaborative programme extends the definition to include differences in identity, life experiences, backgrounds, beliefs and ideas.

 Horticulture Visit

CPUT

5 young people and 3 staff were hosted by CPUT Horticultre Department for a day of learning about soil, plants, irrigation and landscaping. We all had a great time so watch this space for pics of how our garden grows!

Health Zone

Think Tank

Event

The Think Tank was the 1st of its kind at the Youth Centre. It gave the Youth a platform to express their feelings about the clinic and waiting room and also say what they wanted to see happen at the Health Zone.

The attendance was disappointing out of the 30 we needed only 15 pitched but it went well even with the average attendance. We received lots of feedback from the Youth both negative and positive but mostly positive.

The age group we had was appropriate for the event because we wanted mature Youth who attended the clinic who could also give us the answers we needed to improve our service and the Health zone.

We had wonderful catering done for us by sis Phaks and help from the other interns. The food was loved by the Youth.

All the groups Participated and we got a lot of commitments from them volunteering on assisting us with future projects/programmes.

We had a wonderful guest speaker who inspired and motivated the Youth and also told them about them the studies that the Youth Centre as to offer.

All in all it was successful because we got the questions answered and now it’s up to us to improve and try and implement here and there what needs to be changed.

Thanks to everyone who helped on the day and to all the Youth the event wouldn’t of have been possible without you guys.

Valentine's Day

Valentine's day event was great! On the 14th of February we had two events on the day. In the first event we had our younger group between the ages of 12-16. The theme was red and black, and you weren't let in if you didn't have your partner with you. At the beginning, they were very shy to come in because most of the boys didn't have any partner with them. We made an exception and let them in so as to enjoy the day with us. When each couple came in, we took pictures of them and then, they would walk in and sit down. We provided them with pieces of paper so that they could write messages  to their partners on the day. We had prizes for the best dancers and best dressed couple in the room. It started 14:00 and ended at 15:30.

For our older youth members ages from 17-22, the event started at 16:00 and ended at 17:30. The same program was followed with them but the reaction we got from them was the girls were very shy and the guys were really enjoying the event. It was a every FUN day and a day of love at the YC.

Human Rights Event

On the 20th 0f March 2014 we had a lovely Human Rights Day event at the YC, we had prizes to give away which were sponsored from our last event with Jockey. We had a Pick-a- Box show which was based on the human rights video showed to the youth. They were asked question based on those videos and when one had said the right answer they were  given the opportunity to choose a box -  in each box there was a prize waiting to be won. This vidoes where played to educate the youth about their rights and to see if they know them... and to make sure they understand them as well.

Jockey SA & Amanda Dlamini Event

On the 12th March 2014 at Ocean View Multi-Purpose Centre, Amanda Dlamini conducted a Soccer-Clinic and Life Skills workshop with the 45 ladies present at the event. Schools in the 3 communities in the valley were identified to partake, namely: Masi High & Ukhanyo Primary from Masiphumelele, Kleinberg Primary, Marine Primary & Ocean View High from Ocean View and Simons Town High in Simons Town and Jockey SA underwear and Hampers were given out to everyone present on the day and Our Partners were COCT: Sport & Recreation would like to thank them for their support.
