10Days30HoursWorkshop

with Astrid Knowles-Simpson

We have recently completed our SUBSTANCE USE & RECOVERY Workshop with Astrid Knowles-Simpson who is a Social Worker and teacher by profession.  Astrid came in as a volunteer facilitator and has been giving of her time to help engage our youth positively.  Astrid had a great time tailoring this workshop to the needs of the participants who were so engaged. Please visit her website for more details of her work: www.akkedis.com

We have been doing quite a few painting and art sessions at the centre but what stood out most was “what does my community mean to me?”

We painted a huge tree and got the youth to write out positive words of what their community means to them, we were so amazed to see that no matter all the negativity in the community and the bad influences, they still had beautiful, positive things to write.

We ended it off by playing games that some of us older youth forgot about when we were a few years younger like “broken telephone, “wink murder” and all those fun games with no props needed.

      Leather wars!!

We have had these huge leather boxes lying around our store rooms for ages, and eventually we decided to take them out of their misery and start our own leather project! We gather a group of young creators at the Youth Centre and we give them the chance to do whatever they like with it, at the moment we still on the first stage, making wrist and ankle bands. The youth usually take these home and divide them amongst their friends or give it to family members as little birthday gifts.

This is always a messy process, as we always have little bits of leather lying all over the centre, but it’s extremely fun and awesome having the opportunity to engage with the youth on a personal level.

The will to win, the desire to succeed, the urge to reach your full potential... these are the keys that will unlock the door to personal excellence.
